Poly Ad calls this their “Best of Maui Tour,” covering Haleakala, Iao Valley, and Upcountry. It is a great option if you want to see more of Maui and do not want to get up in the middle of the night to catch the sunrise. You will ride in comfort and style in one of Poly Ad’s luxurious minibusses, equipped with air filtration systems and video monitors, which will be showing a visual presentation of the highlights of your tour for your entertainment.
As you head up Mount Haleakala, you will witness the ever-changing scenery, going from sea level to the highest point of Maui, the summit of Mount Haleakala, 10,000 feet high. The scene won’t be the only thing changing; you will notice the climate will cool down by about 30 degrees cooler than when you started your journey. Climate change comes with a change in the landscape, starting with lush green areas, cattle ranch farmland to the arid and exotic terrain as you approach the top of the mountain.
At the summit, you will have the opportunity to explore the rim of the crater for excellent views of its moonlike topography. You will realize then why NASA brought our first astronauts to Haleakala to train them on how to drive on the surface of the moon. You should look around to spot plants only found there, such as the Silversword, and its silvery hairs, fleshy leaves, and low-growing rosette.
The next portion of your tour will take you down from the crater, where you will enjoy breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. You will drive through the Kula area, where you will find cattle ranches and beautiful mountainous sites. Kula is located about 3,000 feet above sea level.
Your first stop after the crater will be Makawao Town, Maui’s “Paniolo” (cowboy) town, and home to Maui’s yearly Paniolo Festival. It is also home to art galleries, restaurants, and small mom & pop stores. Makawao is a great place for you to enjoy a meal, before heading down to Iao Valley.
Iao Valley is a dense rainforest where a major war between two Hawaiian kingdoms took place. It is also home to Iao Needle, an iconic rock covered by green vegetation, towering 1,200 feet above the valley floor. After all these memorable sites your guide will take you back to your Maui home for a well-deserved snooze, so you can be ready for a night on the town!
